Many fiber artists feel frustrated when photographing their work – this hands-on workshop makes fiber photography simple, approachable, and doable with just a smartphone. We’ll reframe photography as documentation rather than performance, then build visual literacy through real-world examples before exploring natural lighting, backgrounds, composition, scale, angles, and basic editing. Participants will photograph their own pieces throughout the day, practice multiple lighting setups, and receive gentle, structured feedback while creating a repeatable at-home system. By the end, students leave with polished photos, a simple editing workflow, a mini portfolio, and greater confidence in sharing their fiber art.

East Building Room 1

Note: All classrooms are on the Dixon May Fairgrounds, 655 S 1st St, Dixon, CA, and students will get free admission on the day of their workshop(s).

Instructor: Cheri Bywater

Cheri Bywater is a fiber-arts educator and co-owner of Textile Indie, a family-run business dedicated to helping makers grow their skills, confidence, and creativity. Her workshops are practical, encouraging, and focused on the skills fiber artists often wish they’d learned sooner: photographing fiber art beautifully, developing an authentic brand, building cohesive color palettes, setting up an online shop, and confidently sharing their work. Drawing on years of experience in teaching, communication, and creative business, Cheri offers warm, supportive, and highly actionable guidance. Students leave her classes with clear next steps and a renewed sense of creative identity.
